CONCEPT ARTIST
CARDSTOC VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

Cardstoc was a class assignment that involved creating a pitch for a short film. I wanted to create a "2.5" world with flat 2D cut-out backgrounds and oblivious 3D characters superimposed on paper themselves. Cardstoc was a kid who realized his bizarre reality by discovering a bafflingly flat melon.

I was inspired by Nintendo 64 video games and the prized melons in Yoshi's Story. I found the 1990s render workaround of animating players as "cards" in games like Mario Kart 64 to be both hilarious and fascinating.

I developed the city and its inhabitants with the subtle patterns of a stylized melon to tie the world together.
Cardstoc's environment was intentionally impossible as buildings were cut-out cards. I wanted to imply absurdity while maintaining appeal by skewing perspective.
